It took me a long time to get this writing thing going. I've started and stopped and tried again. To be honest, I don't know how long it will last. All I know is that I have learned and changed so much in the last decade, and I need some way to document these moments of change; changes of perspective; changes of heart; changes of mind.
On Chinese New Year, I went for a jog along the marshes before work and I listed to This American Life's very first episode, "New beginnings".
In Act 1, Kevin Kelly shares a story about a time he visited Jerusalem. In his search for meaning and God and truth, he had had a moment of catharsis and decided that he was going to live the next 6 months as though he were going to die. He went home, sold all of his stuff, gave his money away and biked across the country.
It's a beautiful story about redemption, second chances and new beginnings. It was appropriate for me to listen to this on Lunar New Year's day, just about the time when I'd failed all my (Solar) New Year's resolutions!
I'll be honest, I'm not going to give up all my earthly possession and up and leave. But I am going to write. And I'm going to write as though I am going to forget.
Here's to redemption, second chances and new beginnings...
